The Quick Guide for a Homeowner Adding a Deck
Once you have decided to build a deck, you will likely seek out a contractor. Here is your 5 minute guide and glossary to what you need to know about adding a deck to your home:
Deck – A deck is raised platform made out of wood or composite (recycled plastic) beams. It can add a flat area near the house, particularly on sloped lots.
Patio – A patio is a flat area at ground level, usually covered by pavers or bricks.
The terms that are used by a contractor for a deck can be confusing, so here is an easy guide.
Footings – The concrete pilings that the deck will rest on.
Beams – Large pieces of wood that support the joists.
Joists – Smaller pieces of wood that support that decking materials.
Now, here are a few issues to consider:
- Deck or patio? The grade of your lot will have a great deal to do with this decision. If your lot is flat and the doors are level with the ground, a patio might be great. Otherwise, a deck will meet the need.
- Wood or composite? New composite materials tend to be more expensive, but the never rot and usually made from recycled bottles. Wood has the beauty of a natural product.
- Access to the deck? If you don’t have a door, particularly a sliding glass door, you will need to factor the location of the door into your decision.
- DIY or hire a contractor? While not particularly complex structurally, decks can be back-breaking, dangerous if not constructed by a professional, and very time consuming.
- Stairs? Planning for stairs that will let people out into the yard easily from the deck is a question that you will want to address early.
- Railings, etc.? Unless the deck is only inches off the ground, you will need to consider railings. The choices are endless, from wood, to glass, to wrought iron.
